You’re right, and the situation is actually even more complex.
For me, the new Volvo OTA 4.2.13 update was successful; however, I did not revert the Orbit changes beforehand. This resulted in the car being blocked with an “ABS/brake error.” Luckily, I applied the OTA at home and had an active Orbit license, so I was able to write the settings again and recover the car.
However, if I had applied the update at work or while on holiday, the car would have been unusable.
It’s also worth mentioning that you retain access to all the changes you’ve made only while you are an active Orbit subscriber. Without an active subscription, functionality is quite limited.
Thinking about it now, it could be a very useful Orbit feature to allow restoring OEM settings even without an active license. This could help prevent or resolve potential critical situations like this one.
