Gear number display in D mode
#1
I've read somewhere that with VIDA it's possible to activate gear number display in drive (so number next to D, not M).
It should last only for that session and should return to default (no display) after shutdown.
Is it possible to do this using OrBit?
And if it's possible is there any downside to this, does transmission enters some service/diagnostic state?
Would it be bad to drive with this enabled for longer periods?

I really hate no having that gear number by default.

As far as I know, it's not possible. There is a config item in Orbit "Gear indicator" but it's only for manual transitions where you see the gear number and small arrows advising the driver when to change the gears.

However,
If you have paddle shifters you can shift the gears manually although the gear is in "D" mode then the current gear number shows up on DIM next to "D"  for about 10 to 15 seconds.  It continues to show the gear number if the driver continues to use the paddles for shifting up or down even in D mode.

I do have paddle shifters, but problem is that when I click it while in D, it will not show current gear, but immediately down shift before showing gear.
This is an issue when I'm slowing down for intersection and it downshifts from second to first gear, I don't want to do that.

From what I could understand it's not a config item, but a service function that last until car is turned off.
This tool offers it, but unfortunately I don't have supported bluetooth OBD dongle to test it.

My volvo S60 2019 Momentum did not come with paddle shifters. I retrofitted them by replacing the steering wheel from an R-design.
Then I had to do some wiring "Added three wires" from the SWM to the gear shift connector. I enabled the paddle shifters via Orbit and walla, it functions just as I described earlier. I did not do anything else.
What you are describing is strange, VOLVO might have changed the software.
The "Gear indicator" setting in your screen shot is most likely same as Orbit setting 037 GEARSHIFT INDICATOR (00 without / 01 with) which is for the manual transmission. Mine is 00 - without from factory and I still have the gear indicator when I shift manually in D mode.

I have XC40 2022 which also came without paddle shifters. Retrofitted them with R-design steering wheel. Also had to add three wires. Car is equipped with electronic gear selector. For me "037 GEARSHIFT INDICATOR" is set to "01 With" from factory.

So just to confirm, when you click downshift only once, it will show you current gear without downshifting?

no, it downshifts and shows the current downshifted gear number as soon as I hit the minues paddle. It stays about 10 to 15 seconds and disappears if I do not continue using the paddles or the the gear shifts itself (up) according to the revolution.

Then I misunderstood you. That is the same behavior I get.
