Retrofit heated steering wheel problem. Help!

Hi,

possibly due to missing LIN bus connection to an existing SWM? Just a thought.
Volvo S60 B5 AWD Ultimate dark MY23:
  • Rear window/Trunk lid spoiler
  • 85% tinted rear windows from the B-pillar, third brake light
  • chrome grille slats wrapped in black
  • Blacked-out Volvo badge on the trunk
  • “S60”, “B5”, and “AWD” badges already removed

Hi all, if I'm reading the steering angle in Orbit, do you know the number values for full left-lock, center and full right-lock? MY2018 SC60 if this helps.

is it -540~, 0, +540~

Thank you.

I'm looking to do this retrofit on my wife's 2021 XC60 T6 R Design, could someone please tell me if I have the nessicary wiring harness? I did not see any connectors that were not connected to anything.

The connector A pin 1 and 7 should be wired. It is the grey connector in the photo you posted.

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding an OEM heated steering wheel retrofit on my 2017 Volvo XC90 D5 Inscription (SPA, Sensus).

The good news: I successfully installed an OEM heated steering wheel and enabled it using OrBit (configuration parameter 186 = 02). The steering wheel heating works!

The problem: Since replacing the original SWM/SAS assembly with a used one, I’m getting ESC and steering angle sensor-related faults.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE INFORMATION

Original SWM (without heating):
  • []Assembly: 32231813[]Hardware: 31443890
  • Software SWLM: 32266024 AA

Replacement SWM (with heating):
  • []Assembly: 32350377[]Hardware: 32350579[]SWM Software: 32350359 AB[]Additional SWM software: 32230339 AA

Integrated SAS in the replacement unit:
  • []SAS SWLM: 32350418 AA[]SAS SWCE: 32350419 AA
  • SAS SWE1: 32350421 AA

Both the new SWM and SAS are accessible through OrBit.

The clockspring was carefully centered before installation (approximately 2.3 turns from the stop toward the center). The steering wheel and front wheels were straight during the measurements.

ORBIT SAS DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS
  • []DID 3018 – Steering Angle Sensor Status: 00 – Faulty[]DID 3019 – Steering Wheel Angle: 16 rad / Raw 0x4000[]DID 301A – Steering Wheel Angle Speed: 64 rad/s / Raw 0x2000[]DID 301B – Steering Angle Sensor Status: 00 – Faulty
  • DID 301C – Steering Angle Sensor Checksum: 185 / Raw 0xB9

The car was stationary with the steering wheel straight during these readings. The angle and speed values are clearly not plausible physical readings.

LOGGED DTCs
  • []BCM-U2D3582[]DEM-U2F0082[]PSCM-U2F0482[]SODL-U012692[]SODR-U012692[]VDDM-U2C4981
  • VDDM-U2D4B83

I haven’t conclusively determined which DTCs are currently active versus historical.

WHAT I’VE TRIED SO FAR
  • []Enabled heated steering wheel through OrBit – working.[]Verified mechanical centering of the clockspring before installation.[]Successfully read the new SWM and SAS software information.[]Checked multiple SAS DIDs, all showing the values above.

I have access to OrBit but not VIDA.

I contacted two Volvo dealerships. One told me that used control modules cannot be reprogrammed because the donor vehicle’s VIN is stored in the module. The other declined the job due to liability concerns.

Neither dealership has actually attempted a software reload on my vehicle.

MY QUESTIONS

1. Could the values 0x4000 and 0x2000, together with the “Faulty” sensor status, indicate an uninitialized SAS rather than defective hardware?

2. Has anyone successfully installed and initialized a used SWM/SAS 32350377 in an older SPA XC90 (MY2017)?

3. Is it possible to resolve this using OrBit, particularly the “Reset steering angle compensation” function? Or is a Volvo VIDA software reload necessary?

4. Could there be a compatibility issue between the newer SAS software and my MY2017 vehicle?

5. Has anyone experienced these exact SAS values after an SWM replacement and successfully resolved the issue?

I’m happy to provide screenshots of all DTCs, DID readings and ECU software information.

I’m not looking to bypass any safety systems. I want to get the SAS and ESC working correctly before driving the vehicle again.

Any advice, especially from people who have performed a similar retrofit, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi!

I think your problem is with the part number. There are many versions with different configurations and variants, and not all of them are compatible.

I had part number 32266025, which is the same as yours, but a different version. Check the attached screenshot.

I eventually installed part number 32266026, which is the same part with the same configuration options as yours, but with the addition of the heated steering wheel function.

Everything worked perfectly for me on the first try.

My advice is to replace the ring with the part number I mentioned.
