Does the coolant need changing?

Does the coolant need changing? Hello. I've searched online and nowhere does it say it needs to be changed frequently. (km, etc.) Does anyone have any information on this? I have 180,000 km and I'm still using the original coolant.

It should be changed at a maximum of every 100,000 kilometers. It doesn’t need to be written; it’s common sense.

I am following a service manual from p3 v60 and change it every 2 years.

Coolant is just one of the liquids that many people don't change. It has a very important role to do in the engine. You can measure the freeze point to give you some indication of it's condition. However coolant has many corrosion inhibitors and they dissolve when engine is used in time. It is good to change every 5 years at most.

Have you checked if that statement applies to all vehicles? In my case, it's a 2019 D4, and there's no time or mileage interval specified anywhere. When the timing belt is changed, the fluid that spills when the pump is removed is replenished, but it's not completely drained. The reservoir holds 6.5 liters, but strangely, more than 4 liters are added. There must be a reason they don't change it. Until now, this might have seemed like common sense, but it appears something has changed.

That's what Volvo Cars told me on the phone today: that it's recommended to change it every 5 years.

Every 5 years or 100K would be a good schedule to adhere by given that genuine Volvo Collant has a good long life I did 185k with my V40 on original coolant and was still nice and green and looked good. If you use cheap stuff I'd go wwith 2 years Max.

That's what Volvo Cars told me on the phone today: that it's recommended to change it every 5 years.

Nothing changed regarding any fluid in car. Everything MUST be changed regularly... If you don't change fluid, you will change car...

Nothing changed regarding any fluid in car. Everything MUST be changed regularly... If you don't change fluid, you will change car...

What do you think about the manual gearbox oil? Although some people change it, the manufacturer says it shouldn't be changed.

There was a reddit thread from volvo tech who was speaking about what to change when even when volvo says you dont need to do this. Search for it.

For my S60 i would go like this:

Recommended Maintenance Intervals

• Annually or every 15,000 km: Engine oil and oil filter
  
• Every 2 years: Brake fluid
  
• Annually: Cabin air filter
  
• Every 30,000–40,000 km: Inspect engine air filter
  
• Every 60,000 km: Change automatic transmission fluid
  
• Every 60,000 km: AWD coupling oil (AOC/Haldex coupling)
  
• Every 60,000 km: Angle gear oil
  
• Every 60,000 km: Rear differential oil
  
• Every 8–10 years: Replace coolant
  
• Every 2–3 years: Air conditioning service and leak inspection**.**

Fuel filter is missing from the list above. I can't remember the official service interval but I change it every 2 years which is about 30000-40000km in my case. Good list though and I totally agree the Volvo tech who has done that list.
