Some modules have more PINs that others.  So, it's case by case, try and fail scenario.  Let's assume your new controller has the same amount PINs. Your original seat controller may or may not control the seat extension when installed on the new seats.  If the original controllers wouldn't control the seat extension, you could still enable it by using Orbit.

Another point you have not mentioned.
Your new seats with the extension, most of those seats are memory seats both passenger and driver.  You can verify this by looking at the seat motor connectors. If there are 4 wires connected to each motor, then you have memory seat(s). The additional 2 thinner wires are for the position sensor inside of each motor.

This means that you could also enable passenger seat memory but you would need to replace the passenger door lock button, trim and do some simple rewiring inside the door panel.

Both of my old seats were memory seats (M1 and M2 in door panel, driver and passenger) and I believe had the same number of wires as the new ones before I did the swap (but hard to confirm). When I look at photos of the seat control modules online it does appear that they have a different number of pins. So who knows.....

At this point I'll probably try to download VIDA and download the appropriate software. Might happen in April. Thank you so much for your help, and if anyone else has tips please let me know!

I finally got around to this. Interestingly, when I loaded VIDA it said the same hardware changes that the dealer was seeing:
TRM Remove
IMS Remove
PSMD Reload
PSMR Reload

I tried the TRM Remove, it worked and then I realized wait wtf why did I do this, my OEM towhook that came with the car no longer works!

So I refreshed VIDA and then the 4/7 and 13 ppl app popped up. Sigh. Anyways, these installed fine but I spend $150 uninstalling and reinstalling.

As you predicted, PSMD and PSMR did not work. Error pops up saying the software is not compatible.

From here, I have one of two options — either I find the old modules, put them in & lose the function of the chairs to update the vehicle, or I simply forego updating the vehicle.

Feeling frustrated with the process. Would have never swapped the seats had I known this would be the case.

If you still have your old seat controllers.
You can try this.
  • Connect original PSMD PSMP, read out, order config test but not install it yet.
  • then connect the new PSMD/PSMP
  • install config test
  • after config test install, the PSMD/PSMP should be OK in the VIDA system, will not block Total Upgrade.
