I have 05 LED With Bending Light, type A, Top Range
When did they use those? Could I switch to HCM if I ever needed to? Seems like if I want to replace the lamp that I need to get a very specific light then.
It looks like the 2019+ XC90 went to a new design. The 2016-2018 Had a total of 4 control modules plugged in. And they seemed to have got it down to 2 with the newer models. Still curious if I can swap in 2019+ lights. I would of course need to swap in pairs.
The 2016-2018 items number 3, 4 and 5 have all been replaced with a single HCM module on the 2019+

I just finishing swapping the headlights and the two used HCMs. It I followed your instructions and completed without any issues.

Headlight Left assembly part# 32338990 used cost me $450 from ebay
Headlight Right assembly part# 32338989 used cost me $450 from ebay
HCMs part number 31427776. Two of them cost me total $95 from ebay. "HIGH 8"
Make sure it marked "HIGH" and pay attention there are sellers from china, they are listing it as High but the pictures shows "MID". Don't order those with "MID"
There is also a listing two identical HCM for $175 but it's labeled "HIGH 9" with same part number. Don't know if those would work too though.
Hi all, I am planning to do pixel headlight retrofit on C40. My car was sold as the ultimate trim (but normal headlight) I wonder, in the worst case that my car was not built with (High) HCM and I have to order a brand new parts from volvo (HCM, Pixel headlight) does that going to guarantee that the HCM will preinstall with the software needed to activate pixel headlight?

I have a 2017 XC90 with bendy LEDs and the 4-module headlights.
Apparently one of the locating nubs is broken off and allowing massive moisture ingress. Now the low/high beam no longer work and the car is throwing a Low Beam Malfunction error, and a Headlight System Malfunction error as soon as the low beams come on.
Where new headlights are $3k + modules & coding, I am absolutely not buying anything new, and the plethora of part numbers on ebay, none of which match the online Volvo IPC or superseded part numbers really makes me weary.
The newer 2-module lights are more plentiful used, but I assumed they weren't interchangeable.
The connector is the same, but the populated pin count and locations are different, with at least one pin not common between the two.
I haven't figured out if they are interchangeable. Based on your homework its sort of looks like they might not be interchangeable, but we might not know without trying. I suspect you are going to need a 4 control module. It might be plug and play as the first gen didnt have HCM. Or worst case, you might be able to swap your control module over. I wouldn't be surprised if do to water ingress that some of the control circuits, one or more of the 4 are damaged from over current and shorting so I would try to get one with all of the modules.
My lights are currently functional, but I would want to upgrade, if possible to the newer ones as they are brighter. I have a 2016.

The easiest way, there should be part number on your current headlights. Search the EBAY with that part number. You can replace the same HW while using your own controllers. You might need to manually adjust the aiming because those id*ts mess around with manual alignment screws! In general, you can replace your headlights with a different part number computable with your VIN and reload your current HCMs by using VIDA. VIDA does not know if the headlights assembly are used or not! It only cares about the controllers and modified config in CEM.

Might not have to do any coding with the early lights.
I spent the last 3 months periodically searching ebay/Google for my PN lights and was not super successful. I found one that was basically destroyed, and one in so-so condition that the seller refused to ship. For most listings, sellers can't be bothered to list the part number so you have to dig through the pictures to find it.
I resorted to generic searches and found more than a dozen part numbers, most of which don't show up in volvo's online IPC at all. The only real hit I got was randomly from a reverse image search in Google photos.
The low beam module I ordered is apparently taking a full lap of the US before being delivered so I still don't know the status of the bendy motor in my light. I did fix all 3 alignment nubs on my current headlight, but my it still seems to be getting condensation from somewhere.
Part numbers for the headlights...it's tough buying used and trying to make sense of things with Volvo. In my case, I was looking for bendy lights for my S60. There are so many revisions!! I tried to track these for my own purposes, to build a list of "good" part numbers to look fr on EBay. I knew there was a revision around 2020-21 to improve the performance of the lights on the IIHS headlamp rating, as a better score was required for Volvo to make sure their cars remained a "Top Safety Pick" in the IIHS ratings.
I stopped counting and recording headlamp part numbers at 8 different revisions 2019-2022 just for the bendy LED lights (i.e. FULL LED) for a US S/V60. And the problem you have is you don't know what each part number revision represents...is it a major change or just a little tweak, which possibly affects whether you could "mix and match" some of the different revisions. What I ended up doing was going by the mf'd date on the lights, to get something that was comfortably after the IIHS revision, and tried to buy a pair. I'm a cheapskate about it, I will lie in wait on EBay with saved searches, waiting to strike ;-) I did end up getting single lamps from different sellers, but the part numbers match up so I assume they are the same "revision" level (32342532, 32342531)
The HCMs, the modules, that's it's own thing. These are easier though, a much more stable part used across many different headlamps, wit consistent hardware part number stamped on them, so not too hard to buy used and get what you need.
On swapping newer lamps...I am open to help invesitgate a little, find what are the "missing wires" in the lamp plug, see if they could they be added. The way the lamps are integrated into the car, with the HCMs the headlamp still plugs to the car, the HCM is part of the lamp. So there are rather few inputs to the lamp unit, probably just a missing CAN Bus connection is needed for the lamp with HCM, then of course OrBit config to tell the CEM the car has HCM type lamps and that may be all that is needed. It might not be that simple, but it could be...
Just checking back to report that my "Low Beam Malfunction" + "Headlight System Malfunction" were resolved with just a new low beam LED module. Nothing extra required, bendy beams still working.
Lens was found cracked in the typical location, which let water in and fried the original module.
Car is a Canadian spec (same as US AFAIK) 04/2017 production XC90 T6 Inscription, with the 9 pin connector (vice 5 pin for the later XC90 with the HCM lights)
