My mechanical shifter stays in "M" position. It only upshifts automatically if I pass 5500 rpm to protect the engine. or, if come to full stop in 4th gear, it puts back to first gear but continues to operate manually.
If the shifter is D, I can still use the paddles to manual shifting temporarily. In this case it goes back to automatic. Let's say i am cruising at 65mph in 8th gear in "D". I use the paddle to shift down to 7th or 6th without gas kick down. then press on gas bring the speed to 75 or 80. after 5 to 10 seconds, it switches back to automatic shifts up.
