Adding motion / tilt sensors to CMA vehicles
#2
(09-16-2023, 09:31 PM)A-P Wrote: Hi there,

I have a '23 XC40 Recharge BEV, purchased in the North American market, and noticed the lack of a "reduced alarm mode". This is apparently well known in various Volvo forums, but it seems recent NA Volvos (a) lack the Interior Motion Sensor (IMS) module and (b) come with a Battery Backed Siren (BBS) module which (potentially) lacks a tilt sensor. So there's no "reduced" alarm mode given the lack of an "enhanced" mode.

This led me on a (ongoing) journey to retrofit my vehicle with those sensors -- following in the footsteps of Power6, who has done the same on his SPA car (and gave some helpful pointers).

I've successfully added and tested the IMS module, but would appreciate the community's help on the tilt sensor.

I believe these instructions should work on all CMA cars (Polestar 2, XC40, and C40).

Adding the IMS module:
  1. Purchase an IMS module (P/N 31652852). I got mine from Riley (the product photo is wrong): https://parts.rileyvolvocarsstamford.com...52852.html
  2. Volvo has some high-level install instructions posted here: https://accessories.volvocars.com/en-us/...8-)%202018
    • I found success using a wider tool to pop off the panel. There are a handful of clips, and I recommend starting from the front corners and working your way back (the back, closest to the windshield is just a hinge type clip). It takes a bit of force...:
    • You'll then need to disconnect the wiring harness from the panel:
    • You should find a pre-routed green connector for the IMS folded back and taped to the cable (not hidden in the headliner):
    • Attach the IMS to the panel you just pulled off (it should just click in):
    • Connect the old wiring harness as you found it, and the new one to the IMS, then put it all back together:
  3. Using OrBit, change setting 65 "Interior Motion Sensor" from "01 Without" to "03 Interior Movement Sensor Preparation". There's an official VIDA software download to do the same, but Volvo does not allow it in our market. But that's why we have OrBit!

You should now see a new "Reduced Alarm Mode" setting in the Controls menu. You can validate if the car is "seeing" the module using OrBit by clicking "Update Profile" and then confirming if "IMS" shows up in the "Active Diag ECU" drop down of the "ECU Tools" tab.

Testing is easy:
  1. Roll down a window
  2. Leave the car
  3. Lock it
  4. Wait at least 2 minutes for the alarm to arm
  5. Stick your arm in the car and wave it around.

Now on to the tilt sensor...
My vehicle came with BBS P/N 31652493 (which I found by querying the BBS for the "ECU Delivery Assembly Part Number" in the ECU Tools tab of OrBit). After a thorough Google search:
  • I couldn't really figure out if this module already has a tilt sensor, and it's just disabled in software (setting 66 "Inclination Sensor" in OrBit)
  • On Riley's site, both 31652493 and 31652494 show as compatible with my vehicle. I couldn't figure how these two differ.
  • I attempted searching EU-based used parts sites, but the couple I found showed both the above part numbers (31652493 and 31652494).

If anyone here is based in the EU and has a recent CMA car, would you mind checking what your BBS part number is?

I have a hunch the numbers are the same for EU and NA, and the OrBit software change is enough to enable it. I could just try enabling it myself and test, but I don't own a proper garage jack (to lift the vehicle slightly, triggering the alarm) -- and out of pure laziness, I want to avoid using the included jack unless I really have to  Smile

Thank you!
AP

EDIT: I should have added, it seems Volvo may be tightening up their hardware / software compatibility checks according to Power6, and VIDA may complain about the IMS if you try doing a "Total Upgrade" (but it won't get you blocked or anything for trying). My car is on software 2.10 and the OTA release is out for 2.11; I'll update here if there are any issues with that OTA update when I finally receive it.
I have 2019 S60. It came with regular alarm from factory without interior motion sensor.  The wiring was there for my car.
Only for the sensor,  dealer wanted $200. Instead, I purchased one of this from ebay for $20. It comes with the motion sensor :-). I just removed sensor from the from ebay, and moved it to mine.  Kept the rest for spear parts just in case. FYI. All car manufactures, changes the part number for exact same parts through years, because they don't want people to find parts for decent price.
