Well, would you look at that... and all it took was a trip to the Volvo dealer to replace the CCD-IHU and update the system software (the Velospinner TPMS sensors were not the issue).
This time around was significantly different when it came to the calibration sequence.
Before there was no TPMS warning flag indication in the driver instrument panel after changing settings in OrBit, only the CCD-IHU displayed the warning flag, and after pushing the radio button to "calibrate" the system the little hamster wheel would spin for only about 10 seconds before it came back with a "failed to calibrate" warning.
This time after the trip to the Volvo dealer for a part replacement / software update, and programing with OrBit (per instructions on the 1st page of this thread) the TPMS warning flag appeared on both the driver instrument cluster and also the CCD-IHU. when I took the S60 out for a drive and ran the "calibrate" the hamster wheel continued to spin for a much longer period of time (closer to 10 minutes in duration) and this time it returned with a "calibration complete" ... now I have a TPMS display with actual pressure values. So I can confirm that this retrofit does indeed work.
In retrospect it is possible that the persistent DTC that was in my system (IHU: U2122E - Invalid Data Received From Vehicle Connectivity Module [VCM]) may have been the root cause for my S60 not being able to connect to the TPMS sensors.
