Crystal shift knob installation in XC60 R design 22
#1
Is it possible to install crystal gear knob in XC60 R design 22 ( came with leather wraped gear knob ) ?
Can orbit software make the car accept this gear knob?

Sadly not. The leather one is a mechanic shifter, while the crystal one is an electronic shifter.

I think the '22 has an electronic shifter.
Mine is a'22,5 T6 and I have installed the chrystal shifter and I didn't need anything changed in the settings. It was the one from Ali. It works but it was quite a job to install.

I looked some information up, see if we can make sense of it. There is a variant for the shift knob type. The variant doesn't affect the config though. So looks like this is not controlled through config.

The EGSM, which is the electronic gear shifter unit in the PHEV, is a different diagnostic part number between the leather and crystal version of the EGSM, 31673442 vs 31673443. So that means it is not neccessarily a compatible module, has it's own versions of software, from the Volvo/VIDA perspective. It may well work, you would need to be OK dealing with any future issues updating software in VIDA as the type of EGSM module will not be original.

There doesn't seem to be enough info in that linked thread, the poster didn't say whether he bought he part new or used. It's a module so if new it would have been needed to be loaded with software. Used you can't be sure what software is loaded on the module already. There is not enough info to say if that could have worked or not.

It's not a config item it appears. But anybody who wants to give a try and see if it can work, I can probably help with any software to load that is needed and OrBit should load it.

(Side Note the EGSM changed for 2022 or 23, new hardware for the "single tap" type shifter to replace the "double tap" shifter many have complained about over the years)

Maybe it is as easy as cloning the EGSM module? As it looks like the base of the boards is exactly the same. Just like the HCMs.
Maybe we could also change the diagnostic number so vida does not see a H/W change. If it works, it works.

Up for a challenge @power6? :-)

Ugh. I had a loaner with the “single tap” shifter. Hated it. I just don’t like the car “skipping” neutral because it knows better than me.

Me too, I hated the way VOLVO designed that shift by wire! They tried to combine traditional shifter together with "P" button and in my point of view they failed big time!
They should have gone full buttons "P, R, N, D" or put the P at the top of the cycle! It just does not make sense to me to get out of the park to R  or D , you need to tap twice in different directions (up for R & down for D) while regular shifter from P to R and D is just one way!

With the newer single-tap shift logic you can access Neutral with a lighter/half pull. If you go right to the stop, then it skips Neutral.
