Adding motion / tilt sensors to CMA vehicles
#1
Hi there,

I have a '23 XC40 Recharge BEV, purchased in the North American market, and noticed the lack of a "reduced alarm mode". This is apparently well known in various Volvo forums, but it seems recent NA Volvos (a) lack the Interior Motion Sensor (IMS) module and (b) come with a Battery Backed Siren (BBS) module which (potentially) lacks a tilt sensor. So there's no "reduced" alarm mode given the lack of an "enhanced" mode.

This led me on a (ongoing) journey to retrofit my vehicle with those sensors -- following in the footsteps of Power6, who has done the same on his SPA car (and gave some helpful pointers).

I've successfully added and tested the IMS module, but would appreciate the community's help on the tilt sensor.

I believe these instructions should work on all CMA cars (Polestar 2, XC40, and C40).

Adding the IMS module:
  1. Purchase an IMS module (P/N 31652852). I got mine from Riley (the product photo is wrong): https://parts.rileyvolvocarsstamford.com...52852.html
  2. Volvo has some high-level install instructions posted here: https://accessories.volvocars.com/en-us/...C40%202023
    • I found success using a wider tool to pop off the panel. There are a handful of clips, and I recommend starting from the front corners and working your way back (the back, closest to the windshield is just a hinge type clip). It takes a bit of force...:
    •
    • You'll then need to disconnect the wiring harness from the panel:
    •
    • You should find a pre-routed green connector for the IMS folded back and taped to the cable (not hidden in the headliner):
    •
    • Attach the IMS to the panel you just pulled off (it should just click in):
    •
    • Connect the old wiring harness as you found it, and the new one to the IMS, then put it all back together:
    •
  3. Using OrBit, change setting 65 "Interior Motion Sensor" from "01 Without" to "03 Interior Movement Sensor Preparation". There's an official VIDA software download to do the same, but Volvo does not allow it in our market. But that's why we have OrBit!

You should now see a new "Reduced Alarm Mode" setting in the Controls menu. You can validate if the car is "seeing" the module using OrBit by clicking "Update Profile" and then confirming if "IMS" shows up in the "Active Diag ECU" drop down of the "ECU Tools" tab.

Testing is easy:
  1. Roll down a window
  2. Leave the car
  3. Lock it
  4. Wait at least 2 minutes for the alarm to arm
  5. Stick your arm in the car and wave it around.

Now on to the tilt sensor...
My vehicle came with BBS P/N 31652493 (which I found by querying the BBS for the "ECU Delivery Assembly Part Number" in the ECU Tools tab of OrBit). After a thorough Google search:
  • I couldn't really figure out if this module already has a tilt sensor, and it's just disabled in software (setting 66 "Inclination Sensor" in OrBit)
  • On Riley's site, both 31652493 and 31652494 show as compatible with my vehicle. I couldn't figure how these two differ.
  • I attempted searching EU-based used parts sites, but the couple I found showed both the above part numbers (31652493 and 31652494).

If anyone here is based in the EU and has a recent CMA car, would you mind checking what your BBS part number is?

I have a hunch the numbers are the same for EU and NA, and the OrBit software change is enough to enable it. I could just try enabling it myself and test, but I don't own a proper garage jack (to lift the vehicle slightly, triggering the alarm) -- and out of pure laziness, I want to avoid using the included jack unless I really have to  Smile

Thank you!
AP

EDIT: I should have added, it seems Volvo may be tightening up their hardware / software compatibility checks according to Power6, and VIDA may complain about the IMS if you try doing a "Total Upgrade" (but it won't get you blocked or anything for trying). My car is on software 2.10 and the OTA release is out for 2.11; I'll update here if there are any issues with that OTA update when I finally receive it.

I have 2019 S60. It came with regular alarm from factory without interior motion sensor.  The wiring was there for my car.
Only for the sensor,  dealer wanted $200. Instead, I purchased one of this from ebay for $20. It comes with the motion sensor :-). I just removed sensor from the from ebay, and moved it to mine.  Kept the rest for spear parts just in case. FYI. All car manufactures, changes the part number for exact same parts through years, because they don't want people to find parts for decent price.

Looking at the parts sites, like Riley, you can see the parts notes show:

31652493
Variant code: L102 and L801

31652494
Variant code: L102 and L802

I don't know why LI02 (Trunk release) matters, but it's the same for both anyways. The "L8" variant code is for "Inclination sensor", 01 is without, 02 is with.

Part 31652494 should do the trick for you. When I swapped on my S60, the parts are externally identical.

I might suggest to buy a used one and not new...used will be already loaded with software, so you won't need to deal with that. It probably can be dealt with but could be tricky if we can't locate the software to flash it with OrBit, or VIDA won't load it, if it sees it as a different "part" which it may or may not. I got a used BBS, cheaper and avoid those possible issues. (Here's an example, lots of EU sellers of recycled parts shipping into the US)

Thanks for this! I bought a cheap used overhead console from Ebay which had IMS part # 31443745. I changed 065 INTERIOR MOTION SENSOR to 02 Interior Movement Sensor and tested successfully with the window down in my 2019 XC90.

If you want, you can also enable passive arming.  It's a good feature has two main functions
1) Car is unlocked via remote or by touching the handle but door is not opened. After about 30 secs. it locks itself.
2) Car is left without locking the doors and ignition is turned off. The alarm arms itself after couple of minutes even the key inside.  If someone opens the door, alarm will sound or if  something triggers the motion sensor through a open window or sunroof.

I had passive arming on.

Had to turn it off. Every time I forgot to lock my car, when we went out to it a family member would get to the car before me, see that it was unlocked, and set the alarm off for the entire neighborhood. It was impossible for us to make the transition.

What I really needed was passive locking. Like walk away, car locks.

Tried it for a few weeks but disabled it since we kept setting it off in the garage. I agree, walk away arming would definitely be better.

Just FYI - I was able to OTA update from 2.10 to 2.12 without issue. So that's nice.

Guys, i'm trying to change the overhead console both front and back with the newer models. Already got them (with motion sensor-that is a different issue cause I don't have the connector for it) and the connectors don't match

The back ones both have 3 wire connector but the old one is bigger. The front one that is already on my car si wired with 10 terminals, 5 on top 5 on bottom but with a few blank ones

Does anybody know the connector number that I need? Is there a way to find the correct number?

Then there's the issue of pinout on the front light. The old connector has 2 bigger wires on both sides and 16 small in between and the new one has 3 big on both sides in a triangle and 10 in between. If the old and new both use the same color it could be easy but I think they don't

Btw: if someone has the time and wants to help me with pinout as well, just pm me and I can pay for the service. Thanks

Hello. My car ,2019 XC40 D3 MOMENTUM FWD, came without an alarm, without IMS and without BBS. I purchased sh IMS and activated (65- 02interior movement sensor)  with car horn and works . When I wanted to install the BBS (siren with inclination sensor 31652494), I couldn't find the connection plug. At IMS, there was a connection plug in the ceiling light.
Where can I find the BBS connection plug or do I have to draw wires?
Has anyone encountered this problem? How did you solve it?
 Thank you
