Parking brake on door open?
#1
Guys, are you aware of any third-party mods or features that could potentially activate the parking brake when the driver’s door opens?

Before my 2019 XC60 T6, I had a BMW X4 F26 that had a shift-by-wire feature and an awesome option to automatically shift to “P” if the driver opened the door.

A couple of days ago, I witnessed a car crash in front of me and rushed to help. However, in my hurry, I forgot to put my Volvo into “P” or activate the parking brake, almost causing another accident. This made me wonder why there’s no safety option for this in our Volvo.

I can’t help but think that I’m not the only one who’s had this issue.

What do you mean you forgot to put the gear in "P" ? did you leave your car in D then or in "N" ?
You can use hill assist function. (A) button where the parking brake is. Enable it, whenever you stop, it engages brakes. If you leave it long enough engaged,  the car turns on the parking brake itself and (A) disengages.

Actually, I left the car in "R" because I tried to put it in "P" but didn't shift it all the way to the end.
Imagine the horror when I saw the car rolling back without anyone inside...
I know about (A), but that's not the solution to this.
I also learned that newer Mercedes models have this option—to engage the parking brake when the driver’s door opens while the car is running.
I also found out that VAG offers a third-party module to do this.
I know this situation isn't typical, but some brands have had this feature since the early 2000s, so I wonder why Volvo hasn't caught up as a safety-focused company.

My 19 S60 will not allow me to reverse if the door is open. Stock.
I am pretty sure it won't let me move forward either.

Strange, I have MY19 s60 (USA) market with mechanical shifter (no shift by wire) and it does go into any gear while the driver door or any other door is open.

There may be a combination of settings for this, since nearly all European manufacturers have implemented this feature on newer vehicles. If @ChainedAlice is willing to share the configuration list, it would be greatly appreciated.

Played around with this at lunch.

It's the Auto Hold feature doing it. Which I have on all the time. Turned if off and I can D or R with an open door. Turn that on, and as soon as I open the door in D or R, the parking brake activates. Since I always have that on I thought that was default behavior, like my friends BMW. Didn't know mine did it til that day we were comparing features.
