Successful Retrofit: Auto-Dimming Mirror + Homelink + Compass
#1
Hey everyone,
I wanted to share my recent experience upgrading my interior rearview mirror and getting the Homelink system to work with my gate, in case anyone else is looking to do the same retrofit.
The Starting Point My car (V60 2020) originally came equipped with the standard manual-dimming interior mirror. Luckily, when I took it apart, I found that the wiring harness for the upgraded mirrors was already present and pre-wired from the factory.
Hardware & Software
  • New Part: I picked up an upgraded mirror with Auto-Dimming, Homelink, and Compass (Part # 32219072).
  • Coding: I used Orbit to update the car's configuration. I changed the mirror type to "Auto Dimm" and enabled Homelink using Homelink Setting 7.
The Homelink Pairing Struggle Getting the Homelink to actually trigger my gate was a bit of a journey. At first, I bought an RX-MULTI cloning device hoping it would easily clone the signal from my mirror, but it completely failed. The mirror just wouldn't communicate with it.
The Solution Big shoutout to paunionutz for the help with this! At his suggestion, I bought a generic 433Mhz RF relay kit that came with two separate remotes. Here is what I did:
  1. Wired the new 433Mhz relay module to my gate.
  2. Paired one of the included remotes to the new relay.
  3. Used that new remote to train the Homelink button on the rearview mirror.
It worked perfectly!
A Few Notes / Quirks:
  • Button Press: You have to press and hold the Homelink button on the mirror for a second or two. A quick, instant tap isn't enough to trigger the gate.
  • Range: The range is actually really impressive. It triggers the gate from almost the exact same distance as my original "Nice" brand gate remote.
Hope this helps anyone trying to get around Homelink compatibility issues after a retrofit! Let me know if you have any questions about the Orbit settings or the relay wiring.
